GEMS CRIPPLED INSIDE

Our readers will know that here at TMR, we've been longtime fans of duo GEMS thanks to their honest songwriting, translucent structures and dynamic electronics. Listening to new offering ‘Crippled Inside’, with its breathy vocalism and haunting synths, you could be convinced that this is a GEMS original, but on closer inspection you'll realise that this title belong to John Lennon. In fact, the duo have reimagined the entirety of Lennon’s solo work, the Imagine LP. ‘Crippled Inside’ is a mighty testament to Lennon’s legacy, showing how our aesthetic obsessed culture continues to hide the real problems within the individual as well as wider society. And, so those original lyrics embedded within GEMS’ icy textures aren't a bit out of place. Speaking about the cover, one half of the band Lindsay says that “I feel like this song sorta speaks for itself but the lyrics are so pertinent to today's Instagram culture. It's crazy how history just repeats itself over and over.” - Hannah Thacker
